13 January 2011, 5:00 am

Compared to some Apple product launches, the debut of the Mac App Store last Thursday was a subdued affair. Current Mac users can't even access the store until they update to Mac OS X 10.6.6. Turning white clouds into black clouds: Cloud-driven hacking is now real
13 January 2011, 5:00 am

In November, I predicted the following: "With the rise of high-end, on-demand supercomputing, those who need CPU power to break encryptions and hack into major players will learn to use clouds to attack other clouds." Only a few days into 2011, we are seeing this come true.

ERP gone bad: Lessons from real-world failures
16 November 2010, 5:00 am

ERP projects are among the most critical efforts IT ever undertakes, as they touch almost every part of essential business operations and are complex technically. Not surprisingly, some fail -- spectacularly. Although ERP has been an enterprise focus for a decade, many companies are still embarking on such efforts, and even more are dealing with ERP redos because of mergers and business changes. Here's what you can learn from the failures of others and put to use on your own ERP projects.

Or at least a semi-new one. Verizon's entry into formerly exclusive AT&T territory was not the week's only news, though you might not know it from the wall-to-wall coverage. What else happened? Google has yet another sweet release of Android in the works. Twitter released the names of people sought by U.S. authorities in the ever-expanding WikiLeaks case. Apple and Microsoft are fighting again, this time over trademarks. And Congress is leaping once more into the online piracy fray (so take cover). Got the skills to best our quizmaster? Give yourself 10 points for each correct answer. Now put down that smartphone and get started.

World travelers' iPhone dilemma
13 January 2011, 11:56 pm

When Verizon Wireless announced it will begin carrying the iPhone on February 10, a friend of mine who had been eagerly awaiting the news quickly became disappointed. Why? Because he travels to Europe and Asia periodically and needs a so-called world phone, one that works in multiple countries' cellular networks. The Verizon iPhone isn't such a device; it works only in the United States and Canada on the CDMA network technology not widely used elsewhere.

U.S. IT hiring shows gains, but jobs may be shifting
14 January 2011, 4:48 pm

For tech workers, hiring and  wages improved at year end, mirroring last month's overall gain in employment.

The U.S.  Labor Dept. said that the economy added 103,000 jobs overall, and led to an  unemployment rate reduction from 9.8 percent to 9.4 percent, a broader trend that also  appeared in tech hiring.
