Bugged out by pests and printers
9 February 2011, 5:32 am

I work as a freelance technician for a relatively large company. I troubleshoot and fix printers, computer parts, and so on. On the whole, the job is uneventful, but there are notable exceptions, such as these two experiences that deliver high doses of the "ick factor."

A pesky printer problem

One day, I got called to a food factory of some kind to do printer maintenance. I needed to replace a printer toner and drum roll, as well as take a look at a few odds and ends (roller engine, printed circuit board) -- pretty straightforward.

HP TouchPad and Pre: New products, but not new ideas
9 February 2011, 2:23 pm

Hewlett-Packard, with several versions of the Pre smartphone and the new TouchPad tablet, is directly targeting Apple with a suite of "connected" devices meant to provide the same range as Apple's iPad and iPhone. The TouchPad, which is expected to ship this summer,  is similar to the iPad in size, weight, and hardware capabilities.

Lesson from AOL-Huffington Post buyout: The mediocre shall inherit the Web
9 February 2011, 12:34 pm

AOL's purchase of Arianna's International House of Huffcakes earlier this week is sticking in my gullet, and no amount of ratswill coffee will wash it down. I think it's because this deal is emblematic of everything that has gone wrong with the Internet over the last three years.

(Then again, maybe I've just turned into one of those cranky old farts who hates everything. What do you think?)

iPhone 4 for Verizon also susceptible to death grip
9 February 2011, 5:30 pm

Bad news for Verizon subscribers who've eagerly wrapped their hands around the CDMA version of the iPhone 4: Your device may be susceptible to death grip -- a loss of signal strength due to how you hold the phone -- like the version that runs on AT&T's

Cisco Linksys routers still don't support IPv6
9 February 2011, 5:54 pm

It's hard to fathom why Cisco hasn't added IPv6 to its Linksys consumer routers  yet, but the company has promised support will come this spring.

A year later: Has Oracle ruined or saved Sun?
10 February 2011, 5:00 am

In its first year in charge of the former Sun Microsystems technologies, Oracle stepped on plenty of toes, as the company dueled with both the open source community and Google. But Oracle also has released a plethora of products and advanced numerous projects derived from the Sun acquisition, ranging from Java and NetBeans IDE upgrades to StorageTek storage units, the Solaris OS, and Sparc hardware. Has Oracle ruined Sun or saved it?

Smartphones and freebies spell success for Google I/O
10 February 2011, 5:00 am

Tickets for the Google I/O 2011 developer's conference went on sale this week. Ever since the show was launched in 2008, it has always been popular. In 2009, tickets sold out in 90 days. In 2010 they cleared out in just 50 days. But this year's rush was unprecedented; according to Google vice president of engineering Vic Gundotra, all 5,000 seats at Google I/O 2011 were claimed in just under an hour.

Deadly sins the tech industry can't seem to shake
10 February 2011, 5:00 am

The technology industry moves so fast and values change so much that its collective attention span and memory can be as ephemeral as a game of Angry Birds. So when I heard that Ken Olsen, the pioneering founder of the Digital Equipment Corp.

But that's not the only tidbit hitting the tech headlines. Don't hold your breath for an iPhone 5 this year
11 February 2011, 5:00 am

If I see one more speculative story on the iPhone 5, I may scream. Given the continual nattering about the iPhone 5 on the blogosphere, don't flinch when you hear that wail. And don't be surprised that there is no iPhone 5 shown in June at Apple's usual iPhone-announcing venue, its Worldwide Developers Conference.

Open source's emerging opportunity in BI
11 February 2011, 5:00 am

When open source doesn't appear on a "strategic IT directions" report from a major consulting firm, should open source advocates be worried?

Accenture's 2011 Technology Vision report (PDF) lists eight trends for which IT decision makers should prepare, as they will change how IT operates and strategizes. These findings are based on research into venture capital funding, IT analyst reports, Accenture's IT Executive Forum, and current R&D activities.

F5 Networks gunning for more data center control
11 February 2011, 5:00 am

Cisco owns networking, right? Not when it comes to the rapidly growing Layer 4-7 switching market. There, F5 Networks has managed to garner nearly 50 percent market share, while Cisco's share has actually declined. John McAdam, F5's CEO, attributes the company's success to having won ownership of certain strategic control points in today's consolidated data centers.
