Survey: Corporate iPad adoption jumps -- driven by businesses themselves
25 January 2011, 11:00 pm

If you wanted proof that the iPad is not merely a consumer device but a hot business tool, Good Technology revealed today that 28 percent of the new device activations by its mobile management customers -- mainly North American large businesses, with thousands of devices managed -- were for iPads in December 2010. The rest were of iPhones and Android devices, at 46 percent and 36 percent, respectively.

Galaxy Tab: A great tablet for the 'can't do Apple' crowd
26 January 2011, 5:00 am

I'm not anti-Apple -- but I'm not drinking the new Apple-flavored Kool-Aid either. Maybe the commercials picking on Microsoft put me off. The first ones were funny, but then they became mean, like Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes. As much as I see the value and use of an iPad, I'm stuck in the "can't do Apple" crowd for now, though there are no viable Windows tablets today, just laptops in a tablet design.

InfoWorld review: Fabulous PHP frameworks
26 January 2011, 5:00 am

The website development world is not ruled exclusively by PHP, but PHP's extensive use as a Web development language is undeniable. Although good statistics are difficult to come by, the trends.builtwith.com site places PHP's Web-wide use at approximately 35 percent -- first among Web development languages and platforms.

Management is not a popularity contest
26 January 2011, 5:00 am

Dear Bob ...

I've just started as a manager in a new company. I have a team of eight reporting to me, and I have a distinct sense of being the outsider -- which, of course, I am, but this feels different. No matter what the topic, I see people exchanging meaningful glances, nudging each other, and otherwise acting as though they're party to an inside joke.

We're paying the contractor for what?
26 January 2011, 5:00 am

I work as a system engineer in the travel industry. To save costs, the Suits on the business side are constantly engaging external contracting firms to develop applications and complete smaller projects. The owner of one firm, "Tom," had impressed them enough to be brought on to deliver and maintain a sales application.

My role was to provide two systems and turn them over to Tom's firm to complete the work. I completed my part, then handed the systems over to the contractors. Soon, the trouble started.

26 January 2011, 6:34 am

Security expert David Rice will reportedly be joining the most secretive organization in America. No, not the National Security Agency -- he's already worked at that runner-up. No, Rice will reportedly be joining Apple.

Beware the fool's gold in the heated mobile and cloud predictions
27 January 2011, 5:00 am

The two pillars of the so-called post-PC revolution -- cloud computing and mobile apps -- are at first blush an odd pair: one dull, one cool; one focused on the enterprise, another on the consumer. But according to recent reports by the market research mavens at Gartner, both are red hot.

Why the hybrid cloud model is the best approach
27 January 2011, 5:00 am

When the industry first began discussing the hybrid cloud computing model back in 2008, cloud computing purists pushed back hard.
