Scareware impersonates legit antivirus software from AVG
2 February 2011, 5:00 am

In what could be an alarming preview of tomorrow's malware-spreading techniques, a new version of scareware is on the move, one that's designed to look exactly like it's a legitimate antivirus product from reputable security company AVG.

For the fifth straight year, IT offshoring savings decline
2 February 2011, 5:00 am

If there's been one constant during the years that Arie Lewin has studied the corporate offshoring experience, it's this: Very few companies understand the strategic value of global sourcing. Even today, just 5 percent of companies that offshore IT services do it really well, says Levin, a professor of strategy and international business at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business and director of its Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER).

Top 10 free open source tools for network admins
2 February 2011, 5:00 am

Routing issues, slow network applications, DNS resolution problems -- a network administrator has to deal with a host of network nuisances on a daily basis. How do you survive when you're constantly under the gun to fix the problems? Like any other professional, you need a solid set of tools.

When the bug in the system is actually a person
2 February 2011, 5:00 am

An IT recruiter came to one of my classes when I was a junior in college, and about 30 of us turned over our resumes. As a barely employable computer science student, I jumped at the chance to get hands-on experience and income while completing my studies, as well as work toward a programming job that could offer full-time employment after I graduated.

One of two companies called back for a second interview. I somehow beat out the competition, although I had to bluff my way through trivia concerning the adventures of a fellow called Link and his girlfriend Zelda.

It doesn't get much better than this: two tech giants playing a game of "cheater cheater pumpkin eater" and "I know you are but what am I?" in public for all the world to see.

Buyers (and non-buyers) guide to secure remote access

Buyers (and non-buyers) guide to secure remote access
11 May 2010, 4:00 am

It always seems to happen. You finally take a couple of days off from work and head to the beach for some sun and sand. Inevitably, someone needs a piece of information only you can provide, and it's locked away on your office PC. Is it time to pack up the cooler and head back to the car?

Not if your office computer is set up for remote access. With a remote access solution, you can easily access your PC (or Mac) and answer the urgent question, all while sipping a drink with your toes in the sand.

How to expose empty office rhetoric -- constructively
2 February 2011, 1:36 pm

Dear Bob ...

I need a snappy comeback. One of my peers likes to describe every idea he proposes as "it's just common sense." Occasionally his ideas actually make sense. More often they're nonsense, but the sort of bumper-sticker-length nonsense that requires an essay to rebut.

Egypt ranked among top global offshoring destinations
2 February 2011, 4:18 pm

Were you to propose to your boss that Egypt would be a mighty fine destination for outsourcing IT work, you'd likely get a forced chuckle or a reprimand.

Amazon's Oracle move shows open source won't gain in the cloud
3 February 2011, 5:00 am

I was not surprised to hear Amazon's announcement that it now rocks Oracle's database in its cloud. Clearly it's a response to Salesforce.com's Database.com, but it also addresses the fact that most enterprises love Oracle.

Currently Amazon offers MySQL on demand, an open source relational database.  However, I suspect that enterprises and government agencies out there just did not want to give up their existing Oracle installations -- and perhaps for good reason.

Chrome OS vs. Android 3.0: Which platform will prevail?
3 February 2011, 5:00 am

Google says it has a vision of the future of software. And since Google is without doubt one of the most important and innovative computing vendors today, independent developers would do well to pay attention. The question is, which vision should we pay attention to?

Beware the plot to increase the H-1B visa program

Beware the plot to increase the H-1B visa program
3 February 2011, 5:00 am

Tech unemployment is still murderously high, so it's no surprise that it took a nearly 10 months to hand out 65,000 H-1B petitions for 2011. That's the longest wait to fill the quota in about seven years, but that hasn't stopped anti-employee forces from hatching a scheme to allow an additional 55,000 graduates to stay in the country and push even more U.S. workers out the door.

Oracle drafts OpenJDK bylaws
3 February 2011, 4:07 pm

Oracle has issued a set of draft bylaws that it hopes will guide the process of developing its preferred open source version of the Java programming language, the OpenJDK.

The goal of the governance document is to encourage "members to act in an open, transparent, and meritocratic manner," the bylaws state. OpenJDK is the open-source implementation of the Java Platform, Standard Edition.
