Guess which major IT company enjoyed the most growth over the past year, in terms of market value. Apple? No. IBM? Nuh uh. HP? Quite the contrary.

RHEL 6 is built, and priced, for big shops

There's always a sense of finally when a new version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) is released. We always know what's coming in the new OS, and generally we know when it'll be available, but we're still working with rapidly aging packages on the previous version and drumming our fingers for the next release.

An IT contractor discovers too much company information
22 December 2010, 5:00 am

In the course of my IT career, I've worked with a variety of personalities in a variety of roles. What never ceases to amaze me is how tech pros will sometimes compromise the business' basic needs due to an oversight or a culture clash.

I had just started a short-term contract with a company for the purpose of organizing and updating its PC image library and establishing a baseline procedure for the development and application of a new image -- pretty straightforward.

Lose your IT religion

You don't have to be in IT all that long before you end up in the middle of a heated religious debate.

Mobile management: InfoWorld's expert guide
18 November 2010, 5:00 am

All of a sudden, many organizations are finding their employees are no longer accepting the corporate-issued BlackBerry as their only mobile option. Even when that is the single formal option, more and more employees are using their own smartphones -- iPhones, Androids, whatever -- for business purposes. With Nielsen projecting that half of all U.S. cell phones sold will be smartphones by 2012, the tide is unstoppable.

Opera boosts standard widgets for Android
22 December 2010, 4:54 pm

Opera Software introduced on Wednesday a widget runtime platform for the Google Android operating system, leveraging the WAC (Wholesale Applications Community) technology.

The runtime will support the WAC 1.0 specification, Opera said. WAC 1.0 is the first draft of the organization's standard enabling mobile applications to target functionality on the device itself, Opera said.

Software development predictions for 2011
23 December 2010, 5:00 am

As last week's post highlighted, predicting the future can be a tricky business, especially in a market as volatile as IT. With the global economy still in dire straits, I don't foresee a lot of fireworks in the software development space for 2011, but with as many loose threads as were left dangling this year, there are bound to be a few interesting advances. Let's see what my crystal ball has to offer.

It's time to rein in Google -- before it assimilates all Web business
23 December 2010, 5:00 am

Remember when Microsoft was the company feared for trying to dominate the computing world? That risk has passed, but a new one -- with Google in the role of the bad Borg -- is taking its place.

VM Import could be a game changer for hybrid clouds
23 December 2010, 5:00 am

Amazon Web Services' new VM Import feature could be a game changer for hybrid cloud deployments. The product allows IT departments to move virtual machine images from their internal data centers to the cloud, as needed. Many applications can benefit from this neat little trick. The low-hanging fruit is disaster recovery, as well as any migration to the cloud required to bring more capacity online by allocating additional VMs.

Top 15 free tools for every Windows desktop
29 November 2010, 5:00 am

If you haven't looked at the Windows utilities landscape lately, you're in for a big surprise. Many of the old favorites have changed, bringing new features to Windows 7, as well as XP. Others have fallen by the wayside, replaced by upstarts that deliver meaningful functionality that once cost big bucks.

Cratchit Hall of Fame 2010: The candidates
23 December 2010, 5:00 am

In my call for Bob Cratchit award nominees, I got some great responses. Some of them seem a bit more in line with what Scrooge would say, but then again, this is the Gripe Line -- so here goes.

Forking will become normal in 2011, so get ready for GitHub
23 December 2010, 10:45 am

Forking is often viewed as a last resort for software projects. However, the growth of GitHub and other distributed version-control systems, along with a reluctant acknowledgement from a key vendor of the popular Subversion version-control system, suggests that forking is going to become commonplace in 2011. Plan ahead to ensure your company is ready for this shift in development methodology.

The 3 best mobile technology advances of 2010
23 December 2010, 11:00 am

I've taken some strong shots on the mobile industry's big failures in 2010, but 2010 will long be remembered as the year that mobile technology became mainstream. Ex-Microsoft CTO Ray Ozzie called it the post-PC era and said it would threaten PC-oriented vendors such as Microsoft.
