True believers: The biggest cults in tech
4 May 2009, 4:00 am

Spend enough time around technology and it starts to get under your skin. It could be a gizmo that changed your life, an ancient computer you loved, or a programming language that took months to master before it finally clicked. And then, nothing was ever the same again.

It became a part of you. You began to identify with it, even develop a belief system around it. You may have attended regular meetings of others similarly afflicted, and openly despised members of other groups. Before you were even aware of it, you'd joined a cult.

32-bit Windows 7 or 64-bit Windows 7?

32-bit Windows 7 or 64-bit Windows 7?
30 October 2009, 4:00 am

For most would-be Windows 7 users, a 64-bit version of Windows 7 is the right move. But if you don't have sufficient RAM (at least 4GB), or you rely on devices that don't have supporting 64-bit drivers, or you need to upgrade an existing 32-bit installation, 32-bit Windows 7 might be the better choice.

The dirt locker: Dirty duty on the front lines of IT

Jobs may still be scarce in today's economy, but there's no shortage of nasty IT work -- as the third annual installment of our Dirty IT Jobs series clearly demonstrates.

Some tech jobs are literally dirty; digging around the innards of a data center or running network cables through crawlspaces, for example, can leave you deeply in need of a shower.

Mobile deathmatch: Apple iOS 4 vs. Android 2.2
21 July 2010, 4:00 am

There've been many challengers to take the smartphone crown, but so far no one has dethroned the iPhone. Palm's WebOS posed a noble challenge but didn't sustain it. RIM's BlackBerry was easily dispatched by the more modern iPhone, and the forthcoming BlackBerry 6 appears unlikely to raise the bar.

Selecting the right cloud: A step-by-step guide
25 October 2010, 4:00 am

There are many patterns, or categories, in the world of cloud computing that you can use to meet the needs of your enterprise architecture. Some solve specific problems, such as security-as-a-service or testing-as-a-service, and some provide complete platforms, such as platform-as-a-service or infrastructure-as-a-service. They all have trade-offs and different problems that each solves. However, you must consider them all in light of your architecture.

Supercharged Android: 12 apps to boost your smartphone

Psst... Come close. There's something I need to tell you, and there's no easy way to say it: Your Android smartphone might not be living up to its full potential.

I know, I know -- you've loved it. You've cared for it. You've cradled it while watching "Frasier" reruns at night. But despite all the tender nurturing, there's a decent chance your smartphone has hidden pockets of power you haven't yet unlocked.

The best mobile devices for both business and personal use
28 December 2010, 5:00 am

I'm confident that 2010 will go down as the year that personal and professional computing officially merged, as the iPhone finally knocked down the wall that had kept the two separate. Sure, working at home on personal PCs had already put holes in the structure, but it was the iPhone that took the barrier out completely.

Top 10 specialty Web browsers you may have missed
19 October 2010, 4:00 am

In the game of technological one-upmanship, the browser used to be an easy place to win. Most people used Internet Explorer, so it was simple to gain the edge by using Firefox. But now Firefox is common, and even Opera and Google Chrome are losing their cachet.

HTML5 how-to: InfoWorld's expert guide

The HTML5 specification may be in draft form for a few years more, but several sections of the draft standard are already deployed in the Apple Safari, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox browsers, with Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 joining the HTML5 train soon.

The daily grind of the tech professional's job is the focus of InfoWorld's Off the Record blog. In this "water cooler chat" setting, readers submit tales that we publish anonymously, sharing stories of humor or frustration or interesting situations faced by those who work in technology.
