What the iPad and iPhone still need to do better
28 January 2011, 5:00 am

Apple is likely to release the iPad 2 in April and an enhanced version of the iPhone 4 in July or August. It's not like Apple to do a wholesale redesign just a year after a previous one, so expect the next iPhone to be an improved iPhone 4 -- what I'm calling the iPhone 4x -- rather than an iPhone 5, just as the iPhone 3G S followed the iPhone 3G.

Cairo mania: Egypt cuts off the Net
28 January 2011, 2:53 pm

In an historic move, Egypt has unplugged itself from the Internet. In Cairo, the Web has gone as silent as a Sphinx. Protestors who've been using Twitter, Facebook, and email to organize street demonstrations against the 30-year regime of Hosni Mubarak are now up the Nile without a cable modem.

Per the BBC:

The server you buy today could last a decade

The server you buy today could last a decade
31 January 2011, 5:00 am

It used to be easy to tell when a server was ready to be put out to pasture. With CPU speeds clicking upward like a shuttle launch, it wasn't terribly hard to justify aging out a 1.3GHz Pentium III server for a 2.26GHz Pentium 4 box. But the yearly boost in clock speed hasn't been in effect for a while now. What's more, we're suddenly very aware of just how little clock speed really matters for a large swath of the data center.

The untapped potential of thin provisioning
31 January 2011, 5:00 am

Not all that long ago, thin provisioning became a feature that storage vendors were tripping over themselves to offer in their products. Since then, it has become a de facto standard that you'll find in just about any virtualized storage array worth its salt.

Unfortunately, the huge potential of thin provisioning is often overshadowed by the complications of using it in production. That's a shame.

Cloud computing: IT as commodity
31 January 2011, 5:50 am

So much digital ink, on InfoWorld and elsewhere, has been spilled analyzing cloud computing -- what it is, whether it's anything new, whether it will change IT as we know it. But a recent conversation has me thinking that cloud computing's greatest contribution may be in the way it applies the principles of mass production to IT.
