Your Android's dirty little secret
31 January 2011, 7:12 am

Presenters at the ShmooCon security conference have spent much attention on mobile vulnerabilities in the last couple years, and several attendees this year say it's a topic of major importance to them.

A Time Machine-like backup for Windows offices
1 February 2011, 5:00 am

Rebit is in the business of providing what InfoWorld's Martin Heller calls "painless backup" -- that is, not just making a backup of raw data, but taking a snapshot of your entire PC. If a catastrophic event occurs, you can restore everything -- data, settings, document location -- and get right back to where you were before the disaster.

The Internet should not be anonymous
1 February 2011, 5:00 am

The news of the U.S. government's latest attempt at a national citizen "Internet ID" brought yet another round of choruses: The Internet must be free! Any government ID plan is bad! Anonymity for all forever! Perform an Internet search on "Obama national Internet ID" to see the screeds against the proposed plan. Security experts around the world are saying the government would have to pry their anonymity from their cold, dead touchscreens.

The forced transition to IPv6 poses hazards
1 February 2011, 5:00 am

With the last IPv4 addresses about to be allocated, the good news is that IT managers -- at least in the U.S. and Europe -- don't suddenly have to get the next Internet Protocol working.

The bad news is that there are some hazards both in putting off adoption of IPv6 and in implementing it, according to vendors and industry analysts.

The Verizon-Terremark deal: An uncertain way into the cloud
1 February 2011, 5:00 am

You may have heard that Verizon has bid $1.4 billion for "cloud provider" Terremark. You may ask, What is Terremark and why would Verizon want to buy it? Terremark is all about managed infrastructure services and cloud computing services delivered from 13 data centers in the United States, Europe, and Latin America -- that is, colocation and managed services, not cloud services in the sense of Amazon Web Services or Google Apps.

How AirPlay and iTunes could enable the 'post-PC' office
1 February 2011, 5:00 am

My favorite IT guy loves to sneer about iTunes when we talk about iPhones. He dislikes that it's the tool for users to back up and otherwise manage their iOS devices -- namely, iPhones and iPads. And I often hear complaints about users wanting to install iTunes when talking to CIOs and other IT pros; they seem concerned about people wasting time listening to music at the office (not that they need iTunes to do that!).

Has System Center Data Protection Manager 2010 purged the ghost of 2007?
2 February 2011, 5:00 am

You might recall my dilemma last year when I installed System Center Data Protection Manager 2007 (SCDPM) for the first time and fell into peril within minutes of clicking around the interface. Little did I know that setting up a protection group and grabbing a data pool would erase a drive so quickly; it was like a live FDISK happened before my eyes. In the process it took out three Hyper-V servers running on that drive, which included a ton of data from the SharePoint Server and QuickBooks.
