The 10 dumbest tech moves of 2010
29 December 2010, 5:00 am

It's been quite a year. And in what has become a tradition here in Cringeville, it's time to honor the most malicious, obnoxious, offensive, or nonsensical behavior in technology. This year's winners include captains of industry, titans of technology, sultans of sweat, and a number of other people desperately in need of a clue.

Without further ado, I give you the 2010 Moonie Award winners:

Top free troubleshooting tools for Windows

No computer runs perfectly forever. Somewhere along the line, something will go wrong. While each successive version of Windows has been that much more reliable and self-healing, that's never been an argument to forgo a good collection of software tools.

InfoWorld review: Free remote access tools for Windows and Mac
28 April 2010, 4:00 am

For anyone whose work follows them wherever they go (and whose doesn't?), a remote access solution is an easy sell. With a remote access tool, your office computer can be reached from home, your home computer can be reached from the office, and both can be reached from your hotel in Omaha or Maui or wherever you happen to be. Remote access means nothing ever gets left behind -- except maybe your laptop.

10 great free desktop productivity tools that aren't OpenOffice.org
4 October 2010, 4:00 am

Most everyone who's had some experience with free open source software has learned about the OpenOffice.org suite of productivity programs: a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, database, and drawing tool that provide a good deal of the functionality of their commercial counterparts. For users who need powerful productivity tools but don't require a high degree of compatibility with Microsoft-formatted files, OpenOffice.org is almost a no-brainer.

7 programming languages on the rise
25 October 2010, 4:00 am

In the world of enterprise programming, the mainstream is broad and deep. Code is written predominantly in one of a few major languages. For some shops, this means Java; for others, it's C# or PHP. Sometimes, enterprise coders will dabble in C++ or another common language used for high-performance tasks such as game programming, all of which turn around and speak SQL to the database.

The right office apps for the iPad at work
1 December 2010, 5:00 am

Users and business managers alike are loving the iPad as a potential laptop replacement, for at least part of the time. And more and more companies are providing employees iPads or letting employees use their own. So, just as companies typically install a suite of desktop productivity apps (nearly always Microsoft Office), what should the iPad equivalent be?

What you need to know about the year of the cloud
30 December 2010, 5:00 am

More than anything, 2010 will be remembered as the year Microsoft jumped into the cloud with both feet. Less obvious, but just as important, was growing clarity around the discrete services offered by public and private clouds -- and who is likely to use them.

The greatest open source software of all time
17 August 2009, 4:00 am

Every year InfoWorld painstakingly selects its Bossie Award winners -- the best open source software for business -- and every year we have shamefully neglected the very cream of the open source crop. While we've awarded the Dojos, Xens, and SugarCRMs, we've ignored Linux, GNU, and the *BSDs -- because, well, don't their excellence and importance go without saying? In other cases, where open source giants did receive our award (Snort and Wireshark come to mind), a "mere" Bossie almost seems like faint praise.

The InfoWorld IQ test: Do you know your tech acronyms?
29 March 2010, 4:00 am

Slug:    13QZ-acronyms            Dek:    How well do you know the lingo of IT? Take this quiz and find out            Byline:    Pete Babb            Source:    InfoWorld            Overview:    Reading IT writing can be like staring at a bowl of alphabet soup: letters thrown together in all sorts of seemingly nonsensical combinations. IT's love of acronyms and abbreviations is the biggest contributor to the alphabet soup model -- it's as though every popular IT term needs to be made into an acronym. There's even an acronym for this: TLA, which means "three-letter acronym."

And sometimes we get so familiar with acronyms that we forget what they actually stand for. You may keep up with programming languages or networking protocols both old and new, but how well do you keep up with the jargon? Let InfoWorld put you to the test!

The strange, unpredictable pricing of 3G data plans
3 December 2010, 5:00 am

Cellular carriers inhabit a Twilight Zone universe. For example, they offer "unlimited" data plans that are, in fact, limited and subject to "reasonable use," meaning whatever they choose it to mean at the particular moment.
