Displaced IT workers stand to lose federal help
6 January 2011, 8:16 am

Apple quietly became a key enterprise provider
31 December 2010, 5:00 am

You won't find many businesses with a more complex, security-conscious environment than JPMorgan Chase. So when the huge bank decided to deploy iPads in its investment-banking arm -- following similar moves by Crédit Suisse and Citigroup -- it was more than just a straw in the wind. Apple, long rooted in education, creative endeavors, and (more recently) consumer electronics, is now an enterprise company.

Android tablets ignore the enterprise to their peril
7 January 2011, 5:00 am

Pundits have predicted the growing adoption of tablets as a top 10 trend for 2011. According to Mashable, a new Forrester report estimates that 44 million tablets will be sold in 2015, surpassing even laptop sales by nearly 5 million and desktop PC sales of more than 25 million. Android-based tablets are expected to capture a significant share of the overall tablet market, and they're making a splash at this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

The key mobile trends emerging from CES 2011
7 January 2011, 5:00 am

At this year's Consumer Electronics Show, it's all about mobile -- and mostly about Android. Srictly speaking, that's not true; there were also plenty of HDTVs, stereo speakers, and other home entertainment wares on display, but the main events have all been about mobile. Naturally, every demo is accompanied by breathless praise by executives of their own "groundbreaking" products -- but beyond the hype, is there anything really important coming out of CES?

Is the Microsoft-Intel marriage finally over?
7 January 2011, 11:26 am

Cringely here, reporting from CES in Vegas, where rude beasts walk the earth (at least, the ones that don't crawl or slither), impeded in their forward progress only by hip-deep mounds of tablet PCs. Everyone appears to be tapping, swiping, and gesturing on some kind of sleek black touch-sensitive device, when they're not squinting at blurry 3D screens waiting for their turn with the polarized glasses.

The straight talk on IT's new directions

Make no mistake: 2011 represents a sea change for IT strategy. Those IT leaders who view the upward trend in IT spend as welcome relief to return to pre-recession priorities will quickly find themselves in trouble.
