Tech's increasing complexity -- and how to manage it
18 January 2011, 3:37 pm

Dear Bob ...

As a member of IT management, I'm beginning to wonder if we have created a computing environment that is starting to become unsustainable from the perspective of complexity.

HTML5 in the browser: Local data storage
19 January 2011, 5:00 am

Of all the changes bundled in the HTML5 drafts, few are as radical or subversive as the options for storing data locally. From the very beginning, the Web browser was intended to be a client in the purest sense of the word. It would display information it downloaded from a distant server, and it would do everything the distant server would tell it to do.

Windows MultiPoint Server 2011: Good for more than just schools
19 January 2011, 5:00 am

I recently helped a large school system make an epic move to newer server technology: Its Active Directory infrastructure was more 10 years old, and I had to switch it to newer hardware and completely migrate it onto the latest versions of Windows Server and Active Directory.

Tech team to salesman: Persistence isn't always a virtue
19 January 2011, 5:00 am

In 2005, fresh out of college, I started working for a custom manufacturing company as the applications developer/help desk tech/network administrator. I developed an application that ran one of the manufacturing division's inventory and job control systems; did time and attendance for the entire organization; and was the sole IT employee in the company. Therefore, a few years later when it came time to replace the company's aging ERP system, as "the computer guy," I was put in charge.

More misadventures on Facebook
19 January 2011, 5:00 am

A story made its way around the InterWebs today about a sneaky little scam that persuaded people -- through social networking site advertisements -- to click on a link to Make-My-Baby.com, which would require users to install a browser toolbar before they could begin creating silly baby faces. The toolbar, when installed, would in turn change their default search engine and home page to an affiliate branded version of Bing.

Avoid the blame game between management and engineering
19 January 2011, 10:00 am

Dear Bob ...

I need quick advice. We've just experienced a serious outage here. It's the result of horrible management decisions that starved the data center and prevented us from engineering a proper installation.

Nokia to cancel X7 smartphone launch with AT&T
19 January 2011, 5:57 pm

Nokia has cancelled the launch of a touchscreen phone that it planned to introduce exclusively with AT&T at the Mobile World Congress Show, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.

The cancellation would be one more missed opportunity by Nokia in an unsuccessful, multiyear quest to gain a stronger foothold in the U.S.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer's gutsy moves deserve credit
20 January 2011, 5:00 am

Maybe Steve Ballmer finally got the message that Microsoft is drifting toward irrelevance. Monday's announcement that his company is going after Salesforce.com with an aggressively priced online version of Dynamics CRM was welcome news. It follows on the heels of a series of gutsy decisions he's spearheaded lately:

MVC development gets a new life in mobile apps
20 January 2011, 5:00 am

Usually, technologists are quick to move on to the latest innovations and relegate older computing methods to the history books. But Model-View-Controller, or MVC, is a software development method that has withstood the test of time because, quite simply, it still works. Popular in Web application development, MVC is now finding a new life in mobile app development.

Amazon.com: The Wal-Mart of Android apps?
20 January 2011, 5:00 am

Last week I talked about the forthcoming Amazon Appstore for Android and how I thought developers could benefit from increased competition in the software distribution market. I still think that's true, but in using the Amazon Appstore as my example, I may have spoken too soon. The more I look at the fine print, the more skeptical I become that Amazon.com's move will be a real boon to Android developers.
