The real cost of lying about IT infrastructure costs
19 April 2010, 4:00 am

It's hard enough to build a solid primary storage strategy for a complex server environment, but that's nothing compared to the effort required to get your proposal through your organization's budgeting process. A refreshed storage architecture or a new backup infrastructure requires loads of capital, which generally means you have to get creative when you articulate requirements to management.

Slug:    NQ110204            Dek:    Egypt finds its voice, Verizon gives iPhone lovers a choice            Byline:    Dan Tynan            Overview:    As a revolution unfolds in Egypt, a much different kind of upheaval occurred in the world of Apple: Verizon rolled out its first iPhones, and News Corp. unveiled the first tabloid designed exclusively for tablets. But that's not the only news fit for, umm, not printing. Android is now king of the smartphone roost, Intel has egg on its face after issuing a recall of its new Sandy Bridge processors, the feds are cracking down on those "Anonymous" hackers, and Microsoft and Google are having a public spat over who stole whose search results. Do you have the technical chops to get a perfect score? Give yourself 10 points for each correct answer. As they say in Cairo, bettawfeeq (good luck).

Lenovo halts shipment of PCs with faulty Intel chip sets
3 February 2011, 6:31 pm

Lenovo on Thursday said it would stop shipments of its latest IdeaPad laptops and IdeaCentre desktops in the wake of Intel's revelation of a flaw in the Sandy Bridge chip-set design.

The PC maker is also offering refunds or the option to replace motherboards at no cost for customers who have already bought PCs that contain Intel's latest Core i5 and i7 processors with the faulty chip sets.

How to present slideshows, video, and more from your iPad
4 February 2011, 5:00 am

The iPad makes a great lightweight laptop replacement, at least for short trips, but it's not a laptop and doesn't always work on the road as you'd expect. I was reminded of that hiccup this week when I was presenting to the Florida local governments' IT association on the potential use of mobile technologies such as the iPad. I was gone for just a couple days, and I saw no need to carry my laptop.

4 February 2011, 5:00 am

Open Source for America (OSFA) recently published a report card on open technology and open government across several U.S. federal government departments and agencies. The results:  One-third of agencies received a passing grade. OSFA, a coalition launched in July 2009 to encourage U.S. federal government support of and participation in open source projects and technologies, worked with government departments and agencies to develop the methodology and rate each group.

How to leave a job with your personal tech intact
4 February 2011, 9:46 am

The ability to transition ethically and legally from one job to another has always been something of an art.

Now, in these days of personal gadgetry and social media mania, it's become infinitely more difficult moving from old employment to new. Today's job changers must figure out how to untangle personal information and unplug personal electronics from company property. And the lines aren't always clear.

What converged networking really means
7 February 2011, 5:00 am

A few years ago, if I had said I was running a "converged network," you might have assumed I had just installed a shiny new network-attached VoIP phone system. Today, convergence has a completely different meaning.

A conversation with IBM's Mr. Big Data
7 February 2011, 5:00 am

Rod Smith has one of the most enviable titles around: vice president of emerging Internet technologies. He earned it. My first encounter with him goes back to the early days of SaaS (software as a service) when he was IBM's point man on the topic. But he is probably best known for his key role in the development of IBM's WebSphere line of middleware, as well as for his early advocacy of XML, Web services, and J2EE.

Tech conference bloopers: 7 stories of snafus and slipups
7 February 2011, 5:00 am

In a way, tech conferences are like movies: You have loads of expensive gadgets, tons of carefully coiffed people, and crews of producers scrambling to keep everything on schedule. It's only fitting that amid that mix, you end up with one hell of a gag reel.

Think about it: From presenters to attendees -- not to mention all that temperamental technology -- there's no shortage of ways in which things can go wrong. When it comes down to it, it's a wonder anything ever goes right.

Terror in the north: Canada loses grip on reality
7 February 2011, 5:00 am

Last week, the Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) instituted usage-based billing for all Canadian Internet users, causing bandwidth caps there to drop from unlimited or 200GB a month to 25GB a month. I've been wracking my brain to figure out how they could possibly believe that this was a useful and necessary step to take.
