If you didn't already have a Netflix streaming subscription, I'm pretty sure you got one for Christmas this year. Since Christmas day, Netflix streaming has been quite problematic in these parts, with audio dropouts, stuttering video, rebuffering, and other problems. Prior to Dec. 25, that was a very rare occurrence.

The myth of 10GbE IP storage

Back in the days before 10Gbps Ethernet was available, the fact that IP-based storage like iSCSI and NFS were stuck at 1Gbps Ethernet speed was used to prove that 2Gbps and 4Gbps Fibre Channel still reigned supreme. Today, with the wide availability and plummeting cost of 10GbE networking hardware, many now argue -- ironically enough -- that the reverse is true.

Microsoft reengineering Dynamics ERP

In an attempt to further ease deployments for third-party developers, Microsoft is reengineering its Microsoft Dynamics ERP (enterprise resource planning) software.

The new version, now code-named Microsoft Dynamics AX 6, should reduce the need for customized code, and will be more tightly integrated with a range of other Microsoft software, such as SQL Server and Microsoft Office, according to the company.

Ballmer ousts Microsoft server chief Muglia
10 January 2011, 1:10 pm

Longtime Microsoft executive Bob Muglia, president of the company's server and tools business, will step down from his position later this year, according to a Steve Ballmer memo issued Monday to company employees.

Muglia will continue to run the STB (Server and Tools Business) while his replacement is found, Ballmer wrote. He will step down "this summer," according to Ballmer, which means his departure should happen sometime between June and August.

InfoWorld review: Nine fine Python development tools

Python has certainly distinguished itself as a go-anywhere, do-anything language. As a language for desktop application development, it can be found behind the Resolver One spreadsheet. As an embedded script language, it's inside the highly respected Blender graphics package and the Rhythmbox media player. It is the binding glue of the Sage open source math package and the Portage package management system of Gentoo Linux. On the Web, it powers the highly popular Zope, TurboGears, and Django frameworks. The list goes on, as any quick Google search will show.

Meyer resigns as AMD's CEO

AMD said on Monday that Dirk Meyer has resigned from the post of CEO, and that the company is beginning to search for a new chief executive.

Meyer resigned in a mutual agreement with the board of directors, and the company has appointed Thomas Seifert, the company's chief financial officer, as the interim CEO.

Where does AT&T go when the iPhone exclusivity ends?

Wannabe iPhone users like me are rejoicing at the imminent prospect of iPhone availability in the United States from a carrier other than AT&T. (Verizon Wireless is widely expected to announce today that it will begin selling iPhones at the end of the month.) AT&T's poor network in many areas has frustrated iPhone users and prevented many more potential customers from getting an iPhone.
